Why did you choose to host Southern Gala: Year of the Ox?

After careful consideration, the Board of Directors for the New Year’s Eve 2021 Southern Gala has unanimously voted to postpone and reschedule this year’s annual NYE Gala, which would have been held December 31st at the Hilton Greenville.

Although the event had been planned with every caution and following every safety protocol possible, with the rising number of local cases and at the recommendation of public health authorities we’ve agreed it would be best to stay at home and urge our friends and family to do the same. Your safety and that of our vendors, healthcare workers, friends and family are our absolute top priority.

Instead, we plan to ring in the Lunar New Year on February 12th, 2021 for our Southern Gala: Year of the Ox.

We’re sure you might have some questions/feelings, as did our Board -- so here’s the answers:

I’m mad. This sucks. I was ready for this to be over and get out of the house. And what about my money from New Year's Eve 2021 Southern Gala?

  • We get it. It sucks. We’re over it too. Like, REALLY over it. We want to party with you AND with our frontline healthcare provider friends, for many years to come -- so we think it’s best to follow their advice and delay for now. We’re also issuing full refunds as fast as humanly possible, and we hope you choose to join us for a future event. If you booked a room with the Hilton, you’ll need to contact them directly to cancel your reservations. We apologize for this inconvenience, and thank you for understanding what we think will be best for everyone.

Do you really think it will be okay to have another event 6 weeks from New Year's Eve?

  • Here’s what the experts that are giving us recommendations are thinking: 6 weeks is 3 times longer than the 14 day quarantine suggested post travel or exposure. This is also past the point where most health care workers and first responders will have received their second injection of the COVID-19 vaccine.

  • We also want you to be able to get your money’s worth.  We weren’t thrilled with the idea of  shutting down the bar at 11:00 p.m. Wash your hands and wear your mask - tell your friends to do the same, and hopefully restrictions will be lifted ASAP.

What’s a Lunar New Year? Is there going to be a weird moon dance involved?

  • Ever heard of the lunisolar calendar? It uses the location of the sun and the moon relative to the earth to determine dates on the calendar. The Lunar New Year is the first day of the New Year of this calendar, which is also the Chinese traditional calendar. You may have heard it described as the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival. This shouldn’t make you break out in an ancient moon ritual dance, but stranger things have happened.

What does the Ox have to do with anything?

  • You might have been ignoring Mrs. Frizzle when she went over this in World History, but it’s okay because we had to look this up too. Every Lunar Chinese New Year has an animal and an element.  2021 is the year of the ox and the element is metal.  2020 was such a dumpster fire- we are hoping the metal ox brings all of us a little bit of luck.  The ox is a symbol of prosperity, not through luck or trickery, but of hard work and perseverance.  Metal, or gold, attributes are strength and determination.

But I still want to party on December 31st!

  • Trust us, we get it. Check eventbrite for other options happening about town. Wash your hands, wear a mask, and don’t leave home if you feel unwell. We’re ready to get back to business.

What about Tell Every Amazing Lady about Ovarian Cancer and the National Alliance on Mental Illness?

How will they get their donations?

  • Never fear- Tito’s Handmade Vodka was generous enough to donate $10,000 to T.E.A.L. and NAMI!

  • Southern Gala: Year of the Ox will also benefit T.E.A.L. and NAMI.  We will be using all of our generous raffle donations to raise even more money for these two amazing charities on February 12, 2021 at Southern Gala: Year of the Ox at the Hilton Greenville.

I’m ready to sign up. What do I need to do?

Again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your patience and understanding. We wish you health + wealth in the new year -- and can’t wait to see you in February for

Southern Gala: Year of the Ox.
